Pain Reprocessing Therapy

There is an answer for chronic pain and frustrating somatic symptoms.

A woman with tattoos on her arm and shoulder is sitting next to another woman lying face up on a massage table with a blue ball on her buttocks. The woman on the table has tattoos on her legs and is smiling with her eyes closed.

The specific technique my patients typically find most effective is called Pain Reprocessing Therapy, but I like to think about it as sensory reprocessing therapy. As an occupational therapist, the sensory system is my specialty. Sensations can include pain, but also less obvious somatic symptoms like nausea, fatigue, gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating and reflux, urinary urgency or frequency, restlessness, or insomnia.

There is a super complex relationship between the body, the brain, the environment, and the sensations we feel. Our memories, histories, and fear related to certain experiences can lead to a misinterpretation or amplification of nerve sensations. The brain can perceive threat from normal sensations.

I appreciate this and also believe your individual experience and values are more important than anything else. I will always stand by the fact that you will always know more about your body than any healthcare provider ever could.

I’m here to gently nudge both the thinking and subconscious parts of your brain to help it recalibrate so you can find some relief in a way that feels good and validating.
